Taguenca, J. A. (April-June 2008). Political science and public administration: a dual university degree for the labor market. Journal of Higher Education, XXXVII(146), 85-93.
Abstract
This article points out that Political Science and Public Administration, two disciplines of knowledge whose object of study is the public sphere, different in terms of theories, methods, techniques and purposes, have remained together as a university course in Mexico since 1959. The answer to this union is to be found in the labor market of its graduates, which needs a common training that allows an understanding between politics and public administration. But this unifying force is also disintegrating: the labor demands of the public sector tend more and more towards specific knowledge and practical skills. The university must attend to this, but it must also link up with its labor market to make it understand that losing generality for the sake of specificity is not the solution.
