Abstract

On April 19, 2010, the telenovela la aparición began airing in Mexico, a television product that presents its protagonists, the mother and her three daughters, as transgressive women, who did not come into this world to suffer, who are contemporary, urban and determined to take control of their lives. These women share a very peculiar family scheme: they all give birth exclusively to girls and all have been widowed in extraordinary circumstances and because of their condition of widowhood they have learned not to need men to survive, because now they have them because they want to and not because they have to. The central phrase with which La aparición became known and sold was Una mujer entera no necesita media naranja, however, this story reproduces the gender stereotype of women who are dependent on their partners on an emotional level, and who establish loving bonds even in the context of gender violence. In view of the above, this paper aims to show how, in the love relationships of the Aparicio sisters, Alma, Mercedes and Julia, actions or omissions typical of violence against women are present. The theoretical and methodological tools used in this work are the feminist gender perspective and the structural conception of culture proposed by John B. Thompson.
