Abstract

Upon consummation of the changeover, many analysts, communicators and politicians rushed to predict the PRI's extinction. Events proved that neither the decadence nor the collapse of this party will occur in the relatively near future. In fact, the predictions about the decline of the PRI were a reflection of the assessments that considered this party as the greatest obstacle to the establishment of a party system. The main mistake of equating alternation with pluralism and alternation with democracy, led to consider the PRI as a mere instrument of presidentialism, an entelechy with no life of its own and no capacity for autonomous leadership. When the alternation was consummated, many analysts, communicators and politicians rushed to predict the PRI's extinction.
