Abstract

Changes in the organization of the economy, in the processes of construction of the individual and in culture, have had an impact on the system of gender relations. The incorporation of women into the labor market has modified the patterns of household functioning. Currently, transformations are observed in the diversity of families, particularly the increase in female-headed households and the increase in women's participation in the labor market and in social and political spheres. The 84 municipalities of the state of Hidalgo were concentrated into five large groups of female-headed households according to the degree of marginalization. A regionalization was carried out and the level of potentialization of each of the groups was determined, considering variables such as: human development index (HDI), gender development index (GDI), gender empowerment index (GPI), marginalization index (MI), also including sociodemographic aspects such as: fertility, sex of heads of household, type of household, marital status, schooling and economic activity status. The objective of this work is to analyze the explanatory factors that characterize female-headed households with the following indices: marginalization, human development, gender development and gender empowerment. Inter- and intra-group comparisons were made in order to determine the influence of female-headed households on the degree of marginalization, or the value of the HDI and according to the GDI and the GEM, analyzing municipal information that would serve as a basis for public policies and to propose development alternatives.
