Abstract

Time-use surveys are considered useful tools for obtaining information on individual spending of time for work, whether domestic or extra-domestic, or for the consumption of goods and services by members of the household itself, as well as showing some details of daily life. Survey data provide empirical evidence of the differences in the time spent by men and women on work according to the roles that have been socioculturally assigned to them: reproductive women, dedicated to domestic work, and male providers of the household, responsible for the generation of goods and services for the market. There are several factors that have led to the growing incorporation of women into economic activity; a decrease in the fertility rate, an increase in the level of schooling, and greater participation in political and decision-making positions, but also a deterioration in the purchasing power and growing unemployment have contributed to placing women on an equal footing with men in terms of requesting their collaboration in domestic work. Therefore, the study of the use of time spent on these activities and the form and magnitude of the income that men and women contribute to the support and reproduction of their families is an excellent opportunity to learn about the differences between the sexes.
