Abstract

This is an updated list of the mammals of El Chico National Park based on field work carried out between 2004 and 2006. Thirty species were identified, 13 of which are recorded for the first time in the park: Glaucomys volans, Peromyscus melanotis, Reithrodontomys megalotis, R. sumichrasti, Spilogale gracilis, Cryptotis mexicana, Sorex saussurei, Dermanura azteca, Corynorhinus towsendii, Eptesicus fuscus, Lasiurus cinereus, Myotis californicus and M. velifer. The order best represented, with 10 species (33.33 %) was Rodentia, followed by Carnivora with eight species (26.67 %). Sixteen.67 % of the species are considered to be in a delicate state of conservation (C. mexicana, S. saussurei, Sciurus oculatus, G. volans and Corynorhinus mexicanus). Locally, the threats to the mastofauna are the result of human settlements and uncontrolled tourism. El Chico is important for the conservation and management of Hidalgo's mammals because it is home to 23.8% of the state's mastofauna, despite its small size (2,739 ha).
