Abstract


In 1699, between February and March, there was an entrance to the Chol Mountain, commanded by the Sergeant Major Don Miguel Rodríguez Camilo. This one was Castilian of the Castle of San Felipe del Golfo Dulce and Mayor of the Port of Santo Tomás de Castilla and of the town of San Pedro Amatique. The entrance was one more incursion of those made in these territories of the Mayan southeast to reduce the so-called "infidel Indians" and runaways scattered in the area and sent from the Audiencia of Guatemala. The main difference of this entry with the previous ones was that in this occasion there was no presence of religious in the same one. However, the objective was the reduction of those Indians, and the mentioned penetration took place in the middle of the rush to incorporate the immediate area of the Chol Mountains, El Petén, to the colonial domain.
