Frequently Asked Questions
1. How is the undergraduate English program organized?
The Institutional Language Program (PIL) sets as an institutional objective at the higher level the mastery of English level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
(CEFR). Thus, in the bachelor's degree program, the B1 level contents are distributed throughout six English subjects:
- Introductory Conversations. Foreign Language (A1.1).
- Past and Future Events. Foreign Language (A1.2)
- Achievements and Experiences. Foreign Language (A2.1)
- Personal Decisions. Foreign Language (A2.2)
- Cause and Effect. Foreign Language (B1.1)
- In Other Words... Foreign Language (B1.2)
2. What happens if I do not take the English placement test in a timely manner?
You will start your language instruction at the basic level (Introductory Conversations. Foreign Language) and there will be no possibility to do it again.
3. How is the English placement test made up?
It consists of 6 levels (A1.1, A1.2, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1 and B1.2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Each level evaluates the skills of reading comprehension, listening comprehension and grammar and lasts 30 minutes. If and only if you obtain a score equal or higher than 9, the level is passed and you can take the exam for the next level.
4. What happens to my test score?
- If you do not pass the first level, you will begin your English instruction in Introductory Conversations. Foreign Language
- If you pass only the first level, you will begin your English instruction in Past and Future Events. Foreign Language
- If you pass the second level, you will begin your English instruction in the subject Achievements and Experiences. Foreign Language
- If you pass the third level, you will begin your English instruction in Personal Decisions. Foreign Language
- If you pass the fourth level, you will begin your instruction in English in the subject Cause and Effect. Foreign Language
- If you pass the fifth level, you will begin your instruction in English in the subject In Other Words... Foreign Language.
- If you pass all six levels considered in the exam, you will have the opportunity to earn credit for all 6 English subjects.
5. How do I access the English placement test?
The exam is done through Plataforma Garza and is available 24 hours a day during the indicated days. You need your assigned account number and PIN.
Remember that receiving help from a third party or making use of reference materials for its resolution will place you in a level that does not correspond to you and, therefore, you will run the risk of failing subjects in the future.
Why didn't the system let me continue with the next exam?
This is due to the fact that the exam for the level answered was not passed with the minimum grade (9) to unlock the subsequent level and therefore the evaluation is terminated at that time.
7. What happens if I did not answer all the English tests?
It is not necessary to answer all the exams as this depends on your level by level approval; that is, you will only answer the ones that the system indicates that you can take based on your knowledge and skills in the English language.
8. How many attempts are possible to perform the examination?
You have only one chance to answer the exam.
9. What do I do if the internet/light signal was lost or some other problem and I could not finish my exam?
You should send an email to cel@uaeh.edu.mx for the next 8 hours with the following information to be provided again with access to the Garza Platform:
10. What happens if I "fail" the placement test?
The placement test does not pass or fail, it only places you in the English level based on your knowledge and skills in the English language.
11. What happens if the time to answer the exam expires?
You will no longer be able to continue the other exams and you will have to end your participation in the placement exam.
12. How will I be informed of the results of the placement test?
You will be informed of the results via email. You will also be provided with the steps to complete your accreditation process in case you have passed more than one level. Remember that, making your accreditation request and paying the service fee (200 pesos) is essential for your English placement test result to be processed. If you do not complete the process or do not finish it, it is an indication that you waive your test result.
You must continue to attend class until you have duly completed the English accreditation process.
13. If I have an international English certificate (e.g. TOEFL; IELTS, CAMBRIDGE, etc.) do I have to take a placement test?
Yes, the English placement exam gives you the possibility of accrediting the entire English program, while the certificate, based on its validity, gives you the possibility of accrediting some subjects. Take the placement exam and from the following semester you can request the accreditation by certificate in case you still have some subjects to take.
