Bachelor's Degree in Medical Surgeon

Historical Background

In 1945, the School of Medicine was created within the Scientific and Literary Institute (ICL). At the beginning of its activities, with two years of the career of surgeon, it was installed in the building of the Civil Hospital, with Ricardo García Ysunza as founder and first director; the rest of the degree was taken at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).

In 1963 the ICL changes to Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH) and its existence is accredited within the legal framework of university legislation, thus acquiring organizational freedom within the framework of the Organic Law of the UAEH; by that time the School of Medicine had 272 students.

In 1973, the curricular project of the Bachelor's Degree in Medical Surgery was approved, establishing at this time the complete six-year career at the UAEH; its first generation of graduates was in 1978. Between 1984 and 1986, postgraduate programs were created in the area of Medicine with specialties in Public Health, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, and Occupational Health and Safety. In 1991 the offer was expanded with the specialties of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. In the period 1986 -1991, half of the Civil Hospital of Pachuca was obtained. In 1997, the specialty in Orthopedics and Traumatology and the Neonatology Subspecialty were approved.

In 1999, the Integration Project of the Institute of Health Sciences (ICSa) was approved, incorporating the academic areas of Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nutrition and Psychology, whose objective is to train professionals with a deep sense of solidarity, social responsibility and comprehensive ethical, scientific and technical training. In 2010, a degree in Gerontology was added. In the same year, the Medical Surgeon educational program was redesigned and began in the second semester of 2001.

In 2000, the Master's Degree in Health Sciences with emphasis in Public Health and Clinical Research began. In 2010 the Master's Degree in Biomedical and Health Sciences is created, recognized by the National Program of Quality Programs of Conacyt. In 2011, the postgraduate educational programs in Emergency Medicine and Medicine of the Critically Ill began. In 2013, the Master's Degree in Public Health was created, also recognized by Conacyt as a quality program.

The first accreditation of the educational program of Surgeon of the UAEH before the Mexican Association of Faculties and Schools of Medicine, A.C. (AMFEM) was obtained in 2001 with a validity of 5 years. In 2006, 2011 and 2016, already as Academic Area of Medicine, the curriculum is accredited again for another five years before the Mexican Council for the Accreditation of Medical Education (COMAEM). In 2023, it is evaluated again.

On the other hand, the Interinstitutional Committees for the Evaluation of Higher Education (CIEES) evaluated the programmatic content, infrastructure, academic capacity and organizational structure of the 1990 curriculum; the highest level of evaluation was obtained and this quality was maintained in the 2003 and 2017 evaluations; 2023 is its most recent evaluation.

The Interinstitutional Commission for the Formation of Human Resources for Health (CIFRHS), through the Hidalgo State Committee (CEIFRHS), granted the Favorable Academic Technical Opinion in 2017 with a five-year validity; in 2023 it is subject to evaluation for renewal.
