PROFILE OF GRADUATION
Internal medicine is the discipline that encompasses in variable proportion a good part of the non-surgical specialties that deal with adult diseases, and includes integrative aspects such as geriatrics, adolescent medicine, oncology and infectious diseases, however, in order to describe the characteristics of the internist it is necessary to start from the fact that the limits of internal medicine cannot be specified.
The internist is the medical professional trained for the care of adults, with a knowledge so balanced in depth and breadth that he/she can provide comprehensive care, solve problems affecting several devices or systems. Determine the need for the involvement and participation of other specialists and coordinate a health care team. Knows in depth and handles with skill, intelligence and experience more complex medical problems; renounces to attend the generally acute common problems that give rise to the call of the first level, does not include within its sphere of interest of action most obstetric, gynecological surgical problems.
It concentrates its interest and action in all those medical problems involving organs, apparatus and systems that can only be separated into specialties, using arbitrary and conventional criteria. It tries to unite the depth of the specialist with the panoramic vision of the general practitioner.
Characteristics: a medical specialist, dedicated to the study and management of adult diseases. An in-depth knowledge of the natural history and pathophysiology of the most frequent ailments in the environment in which he/she works. An expert in taking a clinical history, with which he/she will be able to make diagnostic hypotheses, developing them and supporting them with the most useful, innocuous and inexpensive diagnostic aids in each case. He/she has a great ability to relate to the patient and his/her relatives. He has a global approach to the patient's problems and is able to establish a hierarchy of them. He is an expert in diagnosis. He is an expert in the treatment of prevalent conditions in adults, especially those that are instituted in multiple or simultaneous form. Is a clinical researcher capable of critically analyzing and taking advantage of the results of other researchers.
