On March 3, 1961, the School of Industrial Engineering was founded, along with the creation of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. The Industrial Engineering degree was established in response to the need to incorporate a technical career in the newly born university and to meet the drive towards industrialization of the country, especially in Ciudad Sahagún.
On September 13, 1974, the University Council approved the transformation of the School of Industrial Engineering into the Institute of Exact Sciences, which was divided into two areas: Pure Sciences, covering mathematics, physics and chemistry, and Engineering, with programs such as the Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and the Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering. In addition, the possibility of expanding the educational offerings in both areas was contemplated.
On December 8, 2000, the creation of the Institute of Basic Sciences and Engineering was consolidated, with the objective of developing teaching and research activities. In 1869, the institute offered only one educational program, but today it has a robust infrastructure that houses fifteen undergraduate and twenty-one graduate programs. These programs are distributed in six Academic Areas: Biology, Earth and Materials Sciences, Computer and Electronics, Engineering and Architecture, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Physics. In addition, the institute promotes research and scientific development through its 30 Academic Groups and 8 Research Groups.
