On March 3, 1961, the School of Industrial Engineering was created at the same time as the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. The reasons that drove the creation of the Industrial Engineering degree were: to incorporate a technical career to the nascent University, as well as to attend the political moment in which the industrialization of the country was being promoted, particularly in Ciudad Sahagún.
On September 13, 1974, the University Council approved the transformation of the School of Industrial Engineering into the Institute of Exact Sciences, which was integrated by two areas: "Pure sciences, which included mathematics, physics and chemistry; and applied sciences, which included the different engineering fields". In the first one, a degree in Chemistry was offered, in the second one, a degree in Industrial Engineering, and a possible increase of the educational offer in both areas was also contemplated.
